 1939年にｱﾒﾘｶ合衆国で作られたｽｳｨﾝｸﾞ･ｼﾞｬｽﾞの楽曲。ライオネル・ハンプトンのヴィブラフォンの演奏で広く知られる、32小節の AABA 構成のジャズの楽曲で、作曲は、ベニー・グッドマン、エディー・デ・ランゲ 、ハンプトンの共作。伝説では、ハンプトンが初めて飛行機に乗ったとき

待たされる間にイライラしながら吹いていた口笛の旋律がこの曲に発展したとされている。初録音は、1939年のベニー・グッドマン・セクステットによるもので、ハンプトンとチャーリー・クリスチャンのソロがフィーチャーされている。その後、いくつかのグループがこの曲を録音したが、その中で最も有名なのは、イリノイ・ジャケー のソロをフィーチャーした、ライオネル・ハンプトンとその楽団による1942年の活気に満ちた演奏である。

  何度聴いても、新たな発見のある、真の名盤だ。ショーター,ハンコック,ロン,トニーを従えた、いわゆる第二期黄金クインテットのアルバム（四枚あります）は、どれも必聴。マイルスとショーターが、同じメロディーを吹き続け、リズム三人がアドリブをとる、というタイトル曲①の、そのアイディアが凄い。かなりの集中力が必要とはされるが、聴くたびに、意識を向ける楽器を変えてみると、より分かりやすいかも。全体的にピリピリとした緊張感が漂い、誰一人として無駄な音を出していない。ハンコックがまるっきり弾かない時間もある。トニーのシンバル・

ワークだけで、そこいらのドラマーを一蹴できる。５０年代のマイルスもいい、７０年代も最高だしかし純音楽的に見た時、最も充実していたのは、この時期ではないか。そう思わせるだけの力を持った作品だ。(Amazon brightnoise レビュー）

  アルバムの録音は57年5月から58年1月にまたがっているので、この期間にかけてのコルトレーンの成長ぶりが窺うことができる。というのは、彼は決して停滞していることのなかったミュージシャンであり、特に50年代の後半は日を追うごとに成長して、確固たるスタイルを築き上げていった重要な時間に当たっているからである。マイルスが映画‘死刑台～’のサウンド・トラック録音の為にパリへ行ってしまうと、コルトレーンはニューヨークでセロニアス・モンクのグループに参加した。モンクと演奏できたことはコルトレーンにとって、マイルスとの出逢いと同じ位に重要で、それ故に57年という年はコルトレーンを研究するうえに、おおきな意味をもってくるのである。～～(解説：岡崎正通）

　ブルーノート盤「ソニー・ロリンズ第2集」は1950年代を通じての名盤のひとつである。と私は確信している。 　ソニー・ロリンズは無論のこと、共演者のすべてが実力をあますところなく出し切っているからである。そういうことはあまりなくて、たいていの場合は誰か 一人や二人、気分の乗らぬメンバーがいて、全体の 締まりをなくしてしまうものだ。ここでは全員がベスト・コンディションに

あるばかり でなく、それが相乗作用をなして、一曲一曲を無上の 名演に仕上げている感じである。セロニアス・モンクが2曲に参加していることも、 このアルバムの価値を更に高めているし、特に 「ミステリオーソ」に於いてはモンクとホレス・ シルバーが一台のピアノを途中で交代してそれぞれソロをとっている。 これなどはコレクターズ・アイテムの最たるものであろう。（解説：油井正一）

  キャンパスでのモダン・ジャズ・コンサートというと、真っ先にデイブ・ブルーベックが頭に浮かでくるが、J.J.Jhonsonクインテットのカレッジ・コンサートは、著名なジャズ・ライターであるチャールズ・エドワード・スミスの企画によって行われることになった。鑑賞のための音楽であるﾓﾀﾞﾝ・

ｼﾞｬｽﾞが大学の構内で演奏されるということは、60年代に入ってからは頻繁にみられるようになった。一般のクラブでは演奏を拒否されてしまうような実験的な演奏も、聴衆に若い熱心な学生を迎えて、それなりの成果を収めるようになったが50年代のカレッジ・コンサートというのは、デイブ・ブルーベックを例外として、あまり見られないようだ。そんな事もあって心なしかJ.J.Jhonsonクインテットのサウンドが、のびのびとした明るさをもって響くこのコンサートは、58年2.19にオハイオ大学で行われたものである。～～　　　　　　（解説：岡崎正通）

～～～1曲目の「Dig」は、マイルス・デイヴィスのオリジナルとして広く知られているが、一説によれば、マクリーンがアイディアを出したものとも言われ、事実ブルーノートに吹き込まれた同曲には「Donna」というタイトルがつけられ、作曲者としてマクリーンの名がクレディットされている。ソロの先発はロリンズだが、後年の彼のプレイに比して、もっと軽い感じの音色で、しかし新鮮なメろディーを吹くの。マイルスとマクリーンがそれに続き、最後をまたマイルスが締めくくるが、マイルスのソロは、極めてリリカルで、40年代以来の彼の長所が遺憾なく記録されている。この曲を含めて、録音は決して良いとは申せないが、それでも、ブレイキーのパッキングの上手さは充分にとらえられている。（1976.9.粟村政昭）

～～～リー・モーガンが１５歳の時に早くも自分のバンドを持ち、故郷ビッツバーグのダンスホールなどで演奏していた話は有名だ。モーガンはその才能をディジー・ガレスピーに認められ、彼のバンドに抜擢されたのだった。それもガレスピーと並んでソロをとるという恵まれた待遇であった。当時からモーガンの素質がいかに高く評価されていたかがこれでもわかるだろう。５７年には

ニューポート・ジャズ・フェスティバルにも出演。結局彼は５８年１月にガレスピーがバンドを解散するまで在団している。「リー・モーガン／リーウェイ」のライナーでいソノてルヲ氏が紹介していたが、評論家のナット・ヘントフが一夜、ジャズクラブ「バードランド」でディジーのビッグ・バンドを聴いたところ、耳をつんざくようなブラス・セクションと、そしてブレイクのふところで、生きいきとしたトランペットが聴こえて来た。それは輝かしいトーンで実にフレッシュであり、若々しい音色であった

トランぺッター、ケニー・ドーハムはいわゆるマイルス・デイビスのように、グループ・リーダーとして、時代を画するといった存在の人ではなかったし、ファンの間での人気そのものも、絶えず華やかな話題に包まれているといった類のものではなかった。しかし、50、60年代を通じ、彼の地道な活動と、誠実な人柄を反映した演奏は、実に愛すべきものであり、その愁いに満ちた美しいトランペットの音色は、独自の魅力を生み出していた。７２年１２月５日、ドーハムが腎臓病を悪化させ、４８年の生涯を終えたというニュースを耳にしたとき、我々はジャズメンに対する神の無慈悲さを思い知らされたが、そうした悲しみの気持ちの中で、彼がひとりのミュージシャンとして、後世に残る幾つかの演奏を残せた幸運を考えた。思えばその人の肉体は滅びても、演奏はレコードの溝の中に残される。せめて、ファンとしては、彼の最も素晴らしい面が記録されたアルバムに耳を傾け、早すぎた死を迎えた好漢の思いでを忍ぶよすがとしたい。～～(解説：佐藤秀樹)

～～ゲイリー・ピーコック、彼はミュージシャンとして来日したのではなく、東洋思想に興味を抱き

精神面を今一度、見直そうと考えてこの国にやってきたのである。1970年初頭に単身で来日し

たピーコックはそれから2年以上にわたって日本に滞在した。最初の1年間は、京都、その後は居を東京に移し、それと同時に演奏活動にも力を入れるようになったのである。～～

 このベースの名手にして斬新な音楽性を持った彼の元へ真っ先に馳せ参じたのが菊池雅章だ

った。楽器は違っても音楽的に相通ずるものがあったのだろう。ふたりはたちまち意気投合して、

アルバム制作にまで話が発展する。その最初の形となったものが本作だ。これはピーコックにと

～～おそらく本アルバムはエリック・ドルフィーに捧げたものであろう。ウディは古い1972年録音の「ブラックストーン・レガシー」（コンテンポラリー）で「ディード・フォードルフィー」というドルフィーにちなんだ曲を作曲し、演奏している。そしてこの曲をめぐってつぎのように語っている。

　「私はこの曲（ディード・フォー・ドルフィー）で私たちをみつめているドルフィーを描こうとした。彼は鳥のさえずる平和の国に住んでいて、まるで鳥たちの歌のようであった。それでこの曲を彼に捧げ、私の彼への愛を表現しようとしたものである。1963年にエリックにあったとき、彼は私のコンセプションのすべてを変えた。私は一種のハード・バップを演奏していたのだが、エリックはもっとフリーにもっと抒情的で開かれたプレイに、もっと自分の音楽の中で自分自身になりきるようにと教えてくれた。エリックはいつも私達をみつめているーそうなのだトレーン、バードといった偉大な人たちはいつも私達をみつめているのである」

　この言葉はそのまま今回のアルバムにも当てはまるのではなかろうか。

　ウディは1963年にエリック・ドルフィーのアルバム「アイアン・マン」や「メモリアル・アルバム」でドルフィーと共演し、強い衝撃を受け、以後のウディの音楽的方向を決定づけた。～～クラブ・コロネットに出演していた頃、エリックが彼のプレイを聴いて興味を持ち、ウディに電話したことに始まる。ウディは気絶するほどびっくりした～～～～（岩波洋三）

ミリー・ヴァーノンのこのアルバムは、作家の向田邦子の愛聴盤だったという。『水羊羹を食べる時のミュージックは、ミリー・ヴァーノンの～スプリング・イズ・ヒア～が一番合うように思います。この人は、1950年代にたった一枚のレコードを残してそれ以来、～～消息の分からない美人歌手ですが、冷たいような、甘いような、けだるいような、生ぬくいような歌は、水羊羹にピッタリに思えます。』と1977年にクロワッサン誌に載った随筆に書いている。～～NHKの向田邦子に関する特番で取り上げられたりした。遺品店の会場でもミリー・ヴァーノンの歌が流されたり、このレコードがおいてあったりしたらしい。その為、一部でこのレコードが大変評判になり、中古レコードも値段が暴騰したという。～～（解説：　）

 リーダーはダグ・ワトキンス（1934-62）であるが、やたらにベースソロをフィーチャリングせず、黙って聞かされればドナルド・バードかハンク・モブレーのリーダー・アルバムのように錯覚してしまうところなど、かえって奥ゆかしい気分にさせられる。

　ダグ・ワトキンスはデトロイトの生まれで、同時期一世を風靡したデトロイト出身のポール・チェンバースとは、いとこ同士であり、ハイスクールではクラスメートであった。また、このアルバムでトランペットを吹くドナルド・バードとも学友であった。54年8月ニューヨークに出て、アートブレイキーのジャズ・メッセンジャーズのベーシストとなり、大いに認められて、プレスティッジ、ブルーノートのレコーディング・セッションのは数多く登用された。なかでもソニー・ロリンズの歴史的名盤サキソフッォン・コロッサスで、同じデトロイト出身のトミー・フラナガンと共に、マックス・ローチを中心とするリズム・セクションを構成したことは、すべてのジャズ・ファンに記憶されている。～～

　‘ソング・フォー・ストレイホーン’はマリガンにとって、このステージでの実況が初めてのレコーディングになる。67年に没するまで、デューク・エリントンの無くてはならない片腕であったビリー

・ストレイホーンへの想いをつづった曲でもある。楽屋で仲間達から、マリガンは演奏の素晴らしさを称えられたあと、なんでこの曲を今まで発表しなかったのかと尋ねられた。
